An overall interesting design. I find the ORBIT on the cover interesting and how the O seems to fade in. The colors work well and speak to the theme of space and stars.
ReplyDeleteThis looks light years better than the last time I saw them! It feels very kid-friendly, which is great. I like what you did for Orbit on the cover, but I think the O gets just a little too lost behind STEVE. Also some kerning is needed between the B and the I.
ReplyDeleteLove the changes. Looks very kid friendly which I know is your audience. The addition of shape really adds to the contents page. The only thing I would update is the outline on the text on the cover page. I don't think you need it.
ReplyDeleteSam - I agree with the comments above, especially that the "O" in Orbit is just a little too lost. Maybe the bottom left of it can reappear just a bit, to help us (and your young readers) easily see the first letter of your title. And, I do not believe you need to use a black shadow on all your type... it is screaming at the reader... and shouldn't be. A few more things to consider:
ReplyDeleteDesign for the el/high reader (elementary and high school) means that the text must be designed to be easily read - even as your pages are busy with multiple elements. Paragraphs of type, whether they are on the cover or on inside pages should NOT be centered - because they are simply hard for the eye to track. Please consider changing all the paragraphs on the first and last page to FL alignment. For the sake of the readers.
Are the outside margins large enough on your pages? Please consider enlarging them, at least on the cover.
Contents page: There is a blurb about the article at top left. Should it not be one "chunk" of type... rather than being pulled apart with al that line spacing between each sentence? The navigation (pg #s and articles) seems awkward with a meandering river of negative space separating them. Why? Make this an easy read, by aligning the articles FL, just a tab away from the page #s. You can easily tilt the big star a the top differently, so it isn't in the way.
Lastly - since your 2 page article starts with very little type on the left hand page, have you thought about enlarging the headline to become 2 lines - and introducing a contrast in pt size in that heading?
This will be a strong project for your book - keep working of the pages. Remember... visual hierarchy is important, most elements should be supportive of the focal point, and not compete with it.
