Project 2- Daniel Hurst

  1. I really like the variety in the typesetting here, particularly in how you aren't afraid to play with the direction of the type. I think keeping it generally monochromatic with red accents really gives it pop and plays into the horror aspect. A couple things I think could use some work: The outline of the figure on the left-hand page of the Nosferatu spread has a little bit of a halo effect going on. Maybe work with that that just a little bit so it blends better? I also think the headline "The Vampire on Screen before Dracula" could be placed a little better, the way it floats above the design right now feels a little awkward and out of place.

  2. I think this magazine came out really well, the font choice is perfect for the theme, and the color choice along with the images are awesome. The bottom right page would maybe look a little better if the bottom image was lined up with with the body text maybe.

  3. The cover design is great - but has some typos, so print this in b/w and give it to me to mark up for you. The contents page really needs another main article to sit with the one you have there (40). I say this because the type in that area is too HUGE to be usable. So... add another make believe article and reduce the font to not more than 12 or 14 pt body copy. I don't think you are using a grid structure for your editorial article - and it needs one. Introduce a 2 column grid, and start to align the elements on your right page so it appears to be well organized. Last thought: I wonder if you would want to add a few lines of white body copy text to the left hand page? There seems to be a perfect spot for it, just to the left of his head. Something like an intro sentence... to encourage us to begin reading the article.
