Project 9

Project 9

This projected was a cover for a book that covered the 8 elements of principles and design. I used CMYK idea for the Design Theory & Analysis title and I had used an idea to display the color wheel and each colors complimentary color within the text that was within those colors for the 8 Elements and Principles of Design.

Comments

  1. The complimentary colors of the text to the color "slices" in the wheel is clever. The design doesn't really leave an impression on me, I feel as if something is missing or more need to be added. Perhaps texture in the colors wheels? Different texture for each "slice" but in their coordinate color scheme.

  2. I like the incorporation of CMYK and the color wheel. I wonder if there's any way to add RGB into there since we use that a lot in graphic design. Also I would be careful with the complimentary colors against each other like that because it's a little bit straining to look at. Maybe reduce the value of the text a little bit so it's not quite so strong.

  3. The color wheel is a good idea that brings it all together. I feel like the eyes will wander around the page a bit too much to absorb the whole design. Maybe some of the colors could be toned down. Also the color wheel does feel... flat? Compared to the four squares of the cover it seems not as exciting or textured.

  4. I think all the suggests above are worth thinking about. I want to write about the typography.

Because of where the type is placed, sometimes I think it isn't easy to follow from word to word - resulting in less than easy readability. The worst offender of this is in the middle of the page - the subtitle. I suggest you simply get it out of the "pie chart divisions" and put it on a curved baseline around or inside the circle itself. This will allow us to read it more easily - which is important.

I am aware that this change will mean that you might need to rethink some of the other aspects of the composition (like reducing the color wheel) including the size of other elements - including the Title. The title words appear too large for their designated spaces, but the & actually looks too small. What can be done? Does that & need to be the same size as the rest (I don't see why it needs to be).

Should you include a by-line (author or authors), so it appears to be a more realistic book cover?

This is headed towards becoming a strong portfolio piece - keep working with it!
